[m] is a [m]odern festival of [m]usic brought to you every spring by the members of the Oregon Wind Ensemble.  This FREE public concert will take place in various indoor and outdoor spaces throughout the Frohnmayer Music Building on Saturday, May 5 from 3 to 7 pm.

In contrast to the traditional concert model, [m] celebrates new ways of listening to and interacting with music in a concert setting.  Multiple performances occur simultaneously throughout the venue with the audience members free to wander in and out of performances, snack on concessions while watching street performers in the hallways, use their phones during the concert, and even get involved in the music themselves.

This year, [m]4 will feature over forty exciting performances ranging from the Medieval ensemble Madroña to the funk rock band Volifonix and will juxtapose works by Luciano Berio and John Cage with hits from the movie Ratatouille.  The Oregon Wind Ensemble will close the event with a program highlighting Leonard Bernstein and student composer Grayson Fiske.

[m] thrives on audience participation at all age levels.  Everyone is invited to take part in the “Beat Lab” masterclass, join the Soda Pop Bottle Band, chew through “Symphony in Your Mouth”, and experience Nayla Mehdi’s interactive sculpture installation.  Throughout the concert, audience members will be able to live blog and see their comments projected throughout the performance spaces.

Bring yourself, friends and family, a smart phone or computer, an instrument and/or voice, and get ready to document, shape, participate, make, and create [m]4 with us.
